English Language (and writing) Analysis

I was supposed to be reading James Joyce Dublin som-tin or the other. But it’s been to fantastical maybe my friend Brandon is going to read it - (for oous ooooo-oh). I thought it was time for me to take my place, since I started wearing Doc Martens I thought I’d be accepted. I don’t know what wrong with the book. I was meant to be reading one paragraph a day and sometimes one sentence, I will do it, I will do it! I swear I will do it!

However recently I was bored and thought I would play Call of Duty with out a PlayStation, so on my phone. I got through the anime and then started reading the term and conditions. I read the whole first section for all countries, regions and continents. I think there is a lot to learn from this. I started a Page on my phone called Law Business. The Page is part of taking and keeping my accounts which is a major part of my work.

This Picture was taken from the Call Of Duty Game. It is the First Image that comes up when the game starts. This picture was taken on the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

After I read the first section I needed a break, so I thought it would be okay to start playing the game. I sent a copy of the terms and conditions from one of my email addresses to the other. I sent the terms and conditions through the game console. I was playing the game on my phone so the game console is on my phone. The next day I had the shiver so I deleted the game and other such offending items (games) on my phone because I could not be harmed for playing a game. I thought I would finish reading the terms and conditions anyway. I still wanted to play the game so I went on my email and clicked on the link and started to read the terms and conditions. The layout was different, this is very important in English language. I was also only sent the UK and European terms and conditions, On the console I was reading the American, UK and European (combined and separate), African, Australia and Australasia. I’m not sure if there are terms and conditions for Asia.

If we analyse that first section there is a difference in tone. This is due to the different accents, language prioritisation (wording chooses I think), the Law. As the whole that first section tells you that the game requires that the law of the country is adhered to. For some regions like America and Australia it tells you which law is being referred to for confirmation of adherence from Microsoft. In some instances it tells you the law for UK and European, from what I remember it is Article 19 and the terms and conditions tell you that the game and its use will not intervene with your statutory rights. For the United States they will change the game or something if it stops you from something and going somewhere. Australia the law is so that you must stop playing if it begins to conflict with changes in the law, such that if you don’t the government cannot be held accountable, I think. Africa said we don’t have laws we can tell you (or recite) but you there be any problems Microsoft will pay. I summarised for the sections of the different regions to mean that the player must know and abide by the law.

The language used for the terms and conditions for the region mentioned is mutually understandable. This simularity is comparable within the paragraphs of the terms and conditions which all tell you; the law will be abided by.

Microsoft informs the reader to focus on the terms that best serve them especially or in the event that you can’t finish the terms and conditions at once or you need to revisit the terms and conditions. They do this by ensuring they only send you terms and conditions for your region. I think they except the reader to know the difference between the games they have because for that region you are given links for terms and conditions of their different games. Then there are different versions of Call of Duty all with their own terms and conditions. I read the first part on the first page the link sent to your email sends you to. I did not get to figuring out which Call of Duty I was playing when I read the terms and conditions. I thought it was called Call of Duty. The terms and conditions for “Call of Duty” are not maybe apparent at the first skim.

Both for the initial and the one sent it if important to note how they are sectioned. This is important when reading and writing. Understanding sectioning will help if you produce documents in you job. This helps you meet industry standards. This will be translated from job to job and sector to sector. If you are sensible and stay in your job, that one job they will give you the first, second and third time; you will get a promotion because you can section your work. On the second job it will take longer to get that promotion on the third you may have to rolls with some punches. I don't really know how the first promotion is executed. Sectioning your work means that what your writing can be easily read. in addition to that it can then be easily applied referenced and adhered to. The most important thing is that your documents will be more easily legible and therefore will inform readers of the information you are relaying. The easier it is to read then everything the easier it is reach a conclusion based on the information provided. In the first terms and conditions (the ones given in the console) they use a title and subheadings (I think) and paragraph. Thus sectioning is supported by the writing in that they tell you the section it is and which region is being discussed. In the terms and conditions sent via email there is a headings, then paragrapha and then bullet points with links. The different formats inform you of the different media used for the terms and conditions. The first a word document is used, this means you scroll and find all the information layout in continuous wording. In this case if the writer goes on to another page there is will be a link to the previous page. This is done by using connectives, or using similar wording, or in continuing on with the same information. The reader will also be able to connect the tone, and language chose based on region as mentioned in the first paragraph. Where there are links in context customers may be given information specific to the paragraph. The information will be word or title used in the same paragraph on the previous page to the link the pages and paragraphs for the reader. It is important to note that a word document does not always have pages this is dependent on the editor used to create the document. A web page can separated information more easily and will still serve the purpose, meet design standards and seem appropriate and contextual to the reader. Readers can go back and forth between links. This way of setting up terms of conditions works for a webpage because most people in developed countries are taught to use the internet in such a way. This also informs the reader that the game may not be the or a webpage as they would have to enaction the starting of a game by pressing a link or something simular. This is important because it governs how IT services are used. In this case it tells you in the game and terms and conditions are separate in this case the game is licensed. I infer licensed to mean that you have downloaded and installed software in you you computer or device where as in a web page the game is not on your device. If a game is installed customers are still able to use it without internet where as a webpage requires constant internet. This also informs readers of the terms and conditions that they are required to read the terms and conditions continuously or in full in one sitting for a licensed game before starting playing. I think maybe reader are also informed that they must finished the terms and conditions before accessing the game in the statement that they have to agree with before they start playing. It also tells you how the terms and conditions connect to the game and the inverse mutual exclusivity of the terms and conditions and the game.

There is more to be seen from the information I was given but I think I needed to finish the terms and conditions before starting to play the game even though I had the intention to go back and finish them. I can always start again, I haven’t read all the terms and conditions yet so I don’t know how they will come into effect or change the use of the game. That is what I have understood from my reading of the terms and conditions and my short analysis of language and linguistic tools. I have also linked this to other instances where such literature exists (I think).

Oh yeah it is Called the Call of Duty Game, so in the terms and conditions sent via Email which one eassss ittt? Again?!

I think I shall try Jame Joyce again.
